Biog & More Information

I am a freelance coach and dressage trainer, and both an all-rounder BHSI Accredited Professional Coach and a UKCC Level 3 Coach (Dressage). I am also the Equestrian Director for St Teresa’s Equestrian, based at the prestigious Independent Girls’ School, St Teresa’s, in Effingham, Surrey. I love teaching freelance and working with all sorts of riders and their horses, from Pony Club members starting their eventing or dressage career, up to those wishing to compete at Prix St Georges and above. I am happy to come to you for individual training of horse and rider or for regular clinics.

I am an unusual combination of management consultant (15 years with KPMG) and equestrian coach (over 30 years freelance teaching).

I competed in eventing and dressage throughout my Pony Club and Riding Club teenage years and beyond, including several national dressage and eventing championships. I took my BHSAI in ’78, my Stage 4 and Intermediate Teaching to complete my BHSII in ’79, whilst also representing Edinburgh, Scotland and Britain in the University teams (dressage and show jumping) and gaining a University Full Blue. I had already caught the dressage bug, and, with the help of Barbara Slane Fleming, Stephen Clarke, Pammy Hutton, the TTT and many others, trained my own two horses to Prix St Georges, competing successfully at national championships in the 80's including dressage to music, riding and competing to Intermediaire 2 dressage and training Grand Prix horses.

My business career intervened at that point, but I was still coaching freelance. Thanks to doing the Landmark Forum in ’95 and getting clear about what I really wanted to do, I took my BHSI Stable Managers Exam in ’95, and BHSI Equitation and Teaching in ’96, to complete my full BHSI. I then quit management consulting and had my daughter in '97, and have been a freelance trainer, coach, judge and mum ever since. I fitted in being District Commissioner of the Cobham branch of the Pony Club for 11 years, and Hon Secretary of the BHS Fellows and Instructors’ Association for 10. I added my UKCC Level 3 Coaching qualification through British Dressage in 2013.

As a BD Accredited Coach, BD dressage judge, and BYRDS (Young Riders) Rider Test Judge and Assessor, I run regular clinics in Surrey for BD members and non-members, and BYRDS/under 25s.  I train several local Pony Club Branches, primarily in dressage, I judge and train for BRC Riding Test and Style Jumping, and am a regular BUCS Universities competitions judge (dressage and showjumping). I am passionate about training horses and coaching riders in a correct way of going – rhythmic, free in the neck, swinging over the back, and in balance. I use lungeing, in-hand work and long-reining as well as ridden schooling to improve the horses’ understanding. And having benefited myself from the Alexander Technique, I work with an Alexander Teacher, Sue Merry MSTAT. Together we have formed “EquiPosture” to help riders become softer, more poised, better balanced and more effective with their horse.  And I absolutely love what I do...

Alison is naturally encouraging with the ability to give you a huge sense of achievement with each session. She has the eye to spot a small detail which can make a huge difference to both horse and rider and as a judge, Alison's help with test riding too is a real bonus.I learn something different about myself and my horse every time.

I have been having lessons with Alison for over 5 years. I particularly value her excellent eye for rider's position and the horses's way of going and small adjustments yield big results. She has a wonderful quiet, calm riding style and she schools my Lusitano horse (working at medium + level competing at Ele) when I am away on holiday and I always return to a soft and happy horse who has been very well schooled and looked after. Thanks Alison - you are brilliant!

I have had many years training with Alison , she has been fantastic . Very professional , always makes you feel like you have achieved something in a lesson , full of ideas and can read your horse or pony like a book straight away. Picks up on the slightest thing and wow makes a huge improvement . I first started training with Alison at prelim now medium and pony FEI. I would recommend her to beginners and advanced riders . Always thoughtful , happy and very kind. Thankyou Alison

Alison is very profesional in her approach and has given me the confidence I needed to push myself and my horse. We were both rather stiff when we met and with her help are now working at Novice dressage test level. My horse is rather quirky and with Alison's advice we have overcome several issues to aid our way of going. I would highly recommend Alison to any rider.

Alison has been teaching me from a young age, from when I first entered the world of dressage. I have found her patient, kind and above all a talented teacher, who I always come away from feeling very encouraged and motivated to achieve more. If only we didn't live too far away, I would be receiving a lot more training from her.

Alison began teaching me over 10 years ago and now teaches my children as the National Schools trainer for their school. She is a very encouraging trainer and does not bark instructions or cause a rider to feel inadequate in any way. She is particularly encouraging to my child who is a nervous rider.

Alison teaches my 11 year old daughter who is a little dressage nut. She has had many teachers who tell her to keep her heels down etc, but Alison has taken her riding and her interest into a whole different level. She looks forward to every lesson and always feels she has learnt something new and improved. Alison gives her confidence and constructive criticism. She is the best teacher my daughter has ever had. Highly, highly recommend her.

Alison has been training myself and my pony mare for about 6 years now. Never at any point have I felt patronised or belittled for attempting dressage on a pony - quite the opposite in fact! Alison has been unfailingly helpful, cheerful and supportive, and she never tires of looking at photos/videos/test sheets that I email to her. When I started with Alison I was just hoping to do a good Prelim test, now we are at Elementary, bordering on Medium and I cannot thank her enough.

Alison helped me find a new side to my sensitive and slightly tense horse, after 7 years together trying different schooling approaches it was a breath of fresh air to have Alison's perspective, she helped me find a lovely soft and supple side to him, and gave me lots of new ideas to work on at home between sessions, each time I've come away feeling inspired and positive, and excited to keep schooling.

Having been a part of the pony club and worked with horses from a young age I have been taught by many instructors over the years. But without a doubt Alison is one of the best. She always strives to help you as a rider create a harmonious relationship with your horse, making anything that seems impossible when schooling by yourself become possible. I always come out from a lesson with a big smile on my face and many new ideas to use when schooling before my next lesson. Alison is always encouraging and positive. Absolutely A Class teaching!
